If you're thinking about getting the OLFA 35" x 70" Connecting Grid Rotary Cutting Mat Set and are worried about a smell, here's what we found out. According to our research, this mat, made from silicone material, does have a noticeable chemical smell when you first open it. Some folks have mentioned it can be pretty strong—enough that a few even got headaches.
People have tried different things to get rid of the odor, like soaking it in water with lemon dish detergent or just airing it out. Some had luck reducing the smell, while others said it kind of stuck around.
So if you're sensitive to strong odors, you might want to let it sit in a well-ventilated area for a few days before you start using it. That might help tone down the smell.
